what is the difference between 12v,14v,16v, batteries when it comes to using batteries for car audio? Also i have a 240 amp ho alternator and a saz3500d im looking into purchasing batteries for this whats the best out of the 12,14,16 to use? might be dumb questions but i need the best info i can get. thank you

12v batteries rest at 12.8v, and should be charged between 14.4v and 15v
14v batteries rest in the 14v range and should be charged between 15v and 16.5v
16v batteries rest in the 16v range and should be charged between 17v and 18.5v.

The charging ranges and resting voltages are approximate, and you'll have to look at manufacturer spec for your specific batts, but that's the basics of it.

since your asking this question just stick to 12v batteries for now...

the differnce mechically is very small just a different configuration of cell and their voltages.

as far as how it affects car audio... on amps that can do higher voltages they put out more wattage with the higher voltage... simple as that...

but in order to run higher than 12v batteries u have a few steps..

1. ur car must run off 12v.
2. u need to charge both the 12v and the 14/16v batts.... in this case u need a step up/step down and your alternator/s must mach....

most cars can't handle more then 15-16 volts until you start to burn up the ecu and other factory stuff.

Can someone explain to me the difference in voltage to an amp? Looking at the specs on some amplifiers, I see the RMS changes when voltage changes. How do you wire an amp at 14 volts instead of 12 volts?

batteries.wire them in parrellel increases voltage

alternators.upgrade or have enough available amperes output to continuously keep the voltage from dropping, happens from idle engine, low rpms, inadequate ampere output.

wires.if you lack the require guage size you can limit the amount of amperage that can flow through the wire that relates to voltage output. so if the wire feeding your batteries from your alternator is too small then you're only receiving what the wire is capable of carrying from the alt. to the bat.

logistics.when driving you usually see voltage at around 13.8~12.4v. when idle it's usually 13.1~11.6v. when you have the car turned off you can see a wide range but usually 13.1v~8v.

so, running at ~14v is only a matter of driving or increase the rpm on the engine, which in turn causes the alt. to spin faster and produce more amperage/voltage.

Get an adjustable voltage regulator, measure the voltage, increase the voltage

Understanding that if your other electrical devices are not able to handle an increase there will be ramifications.

Thanks for the explanation. So...how do you know if you need a bigger alternator to produce more power? 2008 mustang GT, two amplifiers, alarm, double-din navigation head unit. I would imagine you have to add up some specs to figure it out.

Lights dim, dash, headlights, or your amplifier begins to cut out[usually on low bass heavy material

The voltage range that you see the power rating taken at is a normal range, its not something wrong that you have to fix. Like a$$hole said, check for dimming lights. That would indicate that voltage is dropping way below what is considered acceptable to the amp and devices in your car as well ( which could damage them.

If you are testing with your car off and your lights dim, then you might want to upgrade to a low resistance battery so that it can provide the quick burst of power that your stock battery can not. It will probably fix the dimming problem (if you have it) with the car on as well.

Upgrading the alternator is not really necessary if you are not getting dimming with the car off after you replaced your battery and upgraded your power cables.

Engine off = 12 volt

Engine on = 14.4 volt
