Why is it necessary to have a discard tube?Discard tubes have traditionally been obtained when drawing samples for coagulation testing to avoid potential tissue factor activation of coagulation in the first tube that may lead to inaccurate results.
Why would you draw a discard tube before a light blue tube?Just prior to drawing the blue top tube as the last tube, draw 1mL into a discard blue top tube to prevent cross contamination from the additive of previously drawn tubes.
Why is a waste tube used for coagulation studies?Prior to collecting tests for coagulation (i.e. Blue top tube) a plain Clear top tube containing no additive must be partially filled and discarded. This “waste” tube prevents tissue thromboplastins from contaminating the Blue top tube.
Why must a discard tube be drawn when collecting a blood sample using a butterfly needle into vacutainer tubes?Use a discard tube (either another blue top sodium citrate tube or a BD discard tube) to remove the air from the tubing, before collecting specimen into the blue top tube.
