Largest port city. 1775, the population had grown to 35,000. A city that large could support many doctors, lawyers, business owners, journalists, silversmiths and craftworkers. A city of many ethnic and religious groups. Also had a large growing black population, both free and enslaved. By the late 1700s, there was an increasing number of black professionals including
doctors, teachers, clergymen, musicians, and business owners.
It was home to some of the colonies' Roman Catholic churches. The Moravians, a Protestant religious group, also established a church in Philadelphia.
