Step 1- Several Different Views

A view is a way of displaying and working with your presentation and it is possible to display a presentation in a number of different ways.
Having different views is extremely useful because it enables you to look at your presentation in different ways.
There are a number of different views that can be used to help preview your work.
Each view displays the slides in a different way and emphasises a different aspect of your presentation.
PowerPoint has four different views which you can work in. Each of the different views can be selected from the View drop-down menu.

Normal - Displays your slides one at a time for easy editing.
Slide Sorter - Displays slide thumbnails for all the slides in the presentation.
Slide Show - Displays your slides one slide at a time filling the whole screen.
Notes Page - Displays your slides one at a time with space for you to add additional notes.


Step 2 - Changing the View

You can switch to a different view either by using the View drop-down menu or by using the buttons in the bottom left corner of the application window.

Normal - This is a combination of three resizable panes allowing you to see the presentation in multiple ways at the same time. This view displays the slide and notes as well as a total outline. Displays your slide Outline and Notes all at once. (default) useful when working with graphics. Only displays a single slide at a time.
Slide Sorter - this view displays as miniature slides to easily move, delete and copy slides. Lets you easily rearrange the slides.
Slide Show - displays the slide in an onscreen slide show (Shift + F5).
Notes Page view is only accessible from the View drop-down menu.


Step 3 - Normal View

This is the default view and opens automatically when PowerPoint is started.

This view allows you to see several aspects of the presentation simultaneously and is often referred to as the tri-pane view.
The large pane in the middle is the slide editing pane. This allows you to add your content and to make the necessary formatting changes.
In this view you can edit your slides one at a time
This lets you easily change the layout of the slide as well as letting you add text, graphics, clip art etc.
This view lets you work with a combination of features simultaneously including editing the slide , outline/slides and the Notes pane
The pane on the left hand slide is called the Outline/Slides pane.
The Notes pane is displayed at the bottom and the main pain is called the Slide Pane.

Normal view is actually a combination of the earlier Slide, Outline and Notes Page views.
You can adjust the sizes of the individual panes by dragging the borders dividing them.
You can drag the dividing borders to resize the panes.
Each of these panes has its own scroll bar so you can move around in the different panes independently.
The Outline/Slide pane also has a cross in the top right corner so it can be closed completely.
You can also adjust the zoom percentage for each pane independently.
The pane below this is the Notes page where it says "click to add notes". This allows you to type additional comments for your presentation that will not appear on the screen during a slide show.
The pane on the left contains two tabs, an outline tab and a slides tab
The Outline tab allows you to display just the text in the presentation.
The slides tab displays small thumbnail slides illustrating how your slides will look.
On the left side of your slide is an area that has two tabs labelled Outline and Slides.
The Outline tab shows your presentation arranged as an outline.
The Slides tab displays small thumbnail images of your slides.
In PowerPoint 97 Normal view consists of just the Slide pane and the Outline view was separate.


Step 4- Slide Sorter View

This allows you to easily rearrange your slides by dragging the slide thumbnails.

Displays your slides as small thumbnails displaying the slide numbers underneath
Extremely useful when you want to rearrange the order of the slides by displaying the whole presentation.
It also indicates any slide transitions, text animations and displays their times.
There is a dedicated Slide Sorter toolbar which is displayed when this view is displayed.

There is also another slide window which contains functions for setting slide attributes ??
The slide number is displayed below each slide and any transitions and animations are indicated.
You can reorder, delete cut and paste slides, add animations, transitions and set timings.


Step 5 - Slide Show View

Displays the slides as an on-screen presentation taking up the full screen.

This runs your presentation from the active slide (no it's the first slide !!!!)
Each slide fills the screen.
This view displays any slide transitions and timings

Pressing ESC will cancel the slide show.


Step 6 - Notes Page View

Displays the slide at the top of the page and a text box at the bottom that can be used for additional notes.

This displays your slide in the top part of the window and displays any notes in the bottom part.
While the notes for each slide are available in the Normal view, this view displays the notes as they will be printed.
This is useful for correlating your notes with particular slides.
These notes can be useful during a presentation and do not appear during a slide show.

Any notes you enter on a slide so not appear during a slide show
The Notes page will only be displayed if you print the Notes page from the printing options.
These notes can be easily printed.


Step 7 - Things to Remember

  • The Normal View of often referred to as the tri-pane because it displays three panes at the same time. The tri-pane view was added in PowerPoint 2000.

  • It is possible to use the shortcut key (F6) to move clockwise between the panes and (Shift + F6) to move anti-clockwise.

  • You can also use the shortcut key (Ctrl + Shift + F6) to switch between the Slides and Outline tabs.

  • PowerPoint 2000 introduced the tri-pane which combines the Slide, Outline and Notes Page views.

  • The Slide miniature is now available in Outline View and in Slide Master View. (View > Slide Miniature) ??

  • Each view is appropriate for a different task.
