Hurley 1,967 solutions Models of Abnormality + Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Terms in this set (51)Based on the diathesis-stress explanation, Philip likely had a genetic predisposition to his particular psychological disorder before experiencing the severe stress of seeing his ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. The biopsychosocial theory incorporates a mixture of biological, psychological, and social factors that influence whether or not an individual experiences mental illness. Although Philip's interaction with his ex-girlfriend served as an extremely acute stressor, he also experienced various chronic stressors during his childhood. For instance, he describes his parents as ineffectual, cruel, and selfish. The behavior that Philip's parents modeled may have had a significant impact on his own behavior and treatment toward his ex-girlfriends. Since I know very little about Philip, aside from what is provided in the text, I would recommend that he set an appointment for an initial clinical interview. A clinician may benefit from using cognitive inventories to explore Philip's patterns of thinking, and better understand his thoughts and assumptions about his relationships with others and himself. It may also be useful to use affective inventories or social skill inventories, as Philip is experiencing some challenges in his interpersonal relationship and personal view of himself. From there on, clinicians may want to determine whether Philip needs any medications to help alleviate some of the stress he experiences on a regular basis.
