When you upload website files from your computer to a Web server you should use a?

This page describes how to upload your pages from your PC using WS_FTP. This is a common Windows File Transfer program. If you use a Mac you will probably use the Mac file transfer program, Fetch. These are two out of a variety of other ftp software.

If you do not have webspace on the web server, contact the Helpdesk. You cannot carry out the procedures described on this page until you have your webspace on the server.

The instructions given below refer to WS_FTP. Instructions for using Fetch on a Mac are given elsewhere

Transferring your web pages with WS_FTP

These instructions assume you have installed WS_FTP Limited Edition v5.1.2600 on your PC.

  • Start up WS_FTP
  • Complete the Session Properties box as shown here
    • Host Name: www
    • User ID: your own username instead of "mmm45"
    • Other boxes you can leave blank: you will be prompted for your password if you don't enter it here
    • Make sure there is no tick in the "Anonymous" box

  • Click "OK"
  • When you connect to www the right-hand panel will show the slash indicating that you are looking at your root directory on the server, like this:

  • In the left-hand panel, find the folder containing your web pages on your computer. In our example this folder is called website.
  • You have to transfer the contents of your local folder website, but NOT the folder itself. So now double-click on your website folder to open it
  • Select the items in the folder that you want to transfer. These instructions tell you what to do if you want to transfer all the files. You can, of course, transfer just one file or a selection of the files.
    • Click once on the first item in your website folder to highlight it (don't click on the two dots right at the top of the list, but on the first item underneath the dots)
    • Press the Shift key and keep it down while clicking on the last item in the folder: now all the items should be highlighted, like this:

  • Choose the correct transfer mode: ASCII, Binary or Auto

    • If you are transferring image files (JPEG or GIF) or other binary files, including Word documents and Acrobat files, choose the Binary transfer option
    • If your are transferring plain text files, including HTML files, choose ASCII
    • If you are transferring a mixed set of files, you need to choose Auto. But before doing so, you should make sure WS_FTP recognises your HTML files as "plain text" — see notes on configuring WS_FTP
  • Click the right-pointing arrow ( --> )
  • All the highlighted items should now be transferred across to your right-hand side — that is, into your diskspace on www

Configuring WS_FTP

You can configure WS_FTP in a number of different ways. Two examples are given here.

  • Define extensions for ASCII transfer
If you use the Auto transfer mode, WS_FTP will check the file extension or suffix to detect whether the file is a text or ASCII file or a binary file. You must list the extensions that are to be treated as ASCII.
    • Click the "Options" button
    • Click the "Extensions" tab in the Options dialog-box
When you upload website files from your computer to a Web server you should use a?
    • Build up a list of extensions by typing them into the box and clicking "Add". Note that you must include the dot, as in .HTML
    • Click OK
  • Startup connection in a particular folder
WS_FTP will put you into the root folder for your account when you connect to the server. Usually this is what you want. But if you are using a shared (departmental) web account, you might always want to start up in your own sub-directory.
    • Click "Connect"
    • In the "Session properties" dialog-box click "Startup"
    • In the box labelled "Initial Remote Site Folder" type in the name of the sub-folder, for example: staff/mmm45: this refers to the folder called mmm45 within the folder called staff which is within your account's root folder
You should NOT start the address of the initial remote site folder with a / character

Why would you include a banner on your website?

Banners are an essential piece since, with them, you can take visitors to highlighted pages and show them the best of your products, discounts, or news. Attracting traffic to the website and improving its image is one of the main objectives we must have.
