What command would you use if you wanted the computer to obtain an IP address from the network host?

Why do I need to renew my computer’s IP Address?
 
If you are having difficulty in connecting to the network, you may not be getting a valid IP Address from your router.  One such instance is when you are getting a self-assigned IP Address such as an IP Address that starts with 169 (e.g. 169.254.x.x).  Renewing the IP Address will allow your computer to request a new IP Address from a DHCP server such as a router.  You have to release your current IP Address so you will be able to get a new one.

 Select from the list of operating systems listed below for specific instructions on how to renew your computer's IP Address:

Windows® 10 
Windows® 8 / 8.1
Windows® 7 / Vista®
Windows® XP

NOTE:  Before renewing your IP Address, make sure that your computer is connected to the router either wired or wirelessly.

 Windows® 10

Step 1:
Right-click on the Windows key then select Command Prompt.

 

 

Step 2:
In the Command Prompt, enter “ipconfig/release” then press [Enter] to release your computer’s current IP Address.

 

 

You will see that the Ethernet adapter section is now void of numerical values.

 

 

Step 3:
Enter “ipconfig/renew” then press [Enter] to renew your computer’s IP Address.

 

 

 

Windows® 8 / 8.1

Step 1:
Press the Windows 

 key on your keyboard and then enter “command prompt” to display the Command Prompt shortcut.  A search box on right side of the screen will appear.

 

Step 2:
Click Command Prompt.

 

 

Step 3:
In the Command Prompt, enter “ipconfig /release” then press [Enter] to release your computer’s current IP Address.

 

 

 

Step 4:
Enter “ipconfig /renew” then press [Enter] to renew your computer’s IP Address.

 

           

Windows® 7 / Vista®

Step 1:
Click the Pear

 button, enter “cmd” on the Search bar, then click the cmd result.

 

 

 

 

Windows® XP

Step 1: 
Click Start > Run.  In the Run window, enter “cmd” then click OK.

 

 

 


 

Step 2:    
On the command prompt, enter “ipconfig/release” then press [Enter].

 Step 3: 
Once the IP Address becomes 0.0.0.0, enter “ipconfig/renew” then press [Enter].
