Sinn fein bedeutung

Sinn Féin became the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly after a historic victory in the 2022 election.

It marks the first time a nationalist party has won the lion’s share of the vote, since the creation of Northern Ireland 101 years ago.

The result could now bring the prospect of a united Ireland a step closer.

What was the result of the 2022 Northern Ireland election?

Sinn Féin won 27 seats. It squeezed out the Democractic Unionist Party (DUP), which has 25 seats and is now the second-largest party.

The Alliance Party, which is not aligned with wither the unionist or nationalist commun ities, also made history by winning 17 seats to become the third-largest party in the assembly for the first time.

The Ulster Unionists (UUP) have nine and the nationalist Social and Democratic Labour Party (SDLP) eight, with four others elected.

Sinn Féin’s vice-president, Michelle O’Neill, who heads the party within Stormont, is set to become the first minister if the DUP nominates a deputy first minister.

Under the Good Friday Agreement, power must be shared with the largest unionist party.

However, the first and deputy first ministers, one unionist and one nationalist, have equal powers and one cannot hold office without the other.

A new Stormont government is not likely to be formed any time soon, however, as the DUP has warned that it will not make a deal unless the Nothern Ireland protocol is overhauled.

The protocol was introduced after Brexit to prevent a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Under the protocol, additional checks are carried out on goods arriving into Northern Ireland from Great Britain, and some have blamed it for disruption to trade between Northern Ireland and mainland Britain.

What does Sinn Féin mean?

It is Irish for “ourselves” or “we ourselves”. It is frequently mistranslated as “ourselves alone” – this derives from “Sinn Féin amháin”, an early-20th-century slogan.

In the 1890s “Sinn Féin, Sinn Féin amháin” was the slogan of the Gaelic League – an organisation which advocated the revival of the Irish language.

The original Sinn Féin was founded in Dublin in 1905 by Irish writer, newspaper editor and politician, Arthur Griffith.

His main political proposal was for Irish MPs to withdraw from the British Parliament and for there to be home rule.

What are Sinn Féin’s policies?

It supports a united Ireland, however, during campaigning for the elections, its focus rested heavily on issues such as the cost of living, healthcare and housing. In its manifesto, it said: “Rising living costs and fuel and electricity price hikes are placing huge pressure on ordinary people.

“Over a decade of Tory austerity has left workers, families, and public services less able to deal with crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic and now the spiralling cost of living.

“Boris Johnson has done little to support people through this crisis and while people continue to struggle, big corporations and energy companies’ profits soar”.

  1. Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin is an Irish republican political party in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The name is Irish for "ourselves" or "we ourselves", although it is frequently mistranslated as "ourselves alone". Originating in the Sinn Féin organisation founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith, it took its current form in 1970 after a split within the party. Sinn Féin is led by Gerry Adams, and has elected representatives in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The party in its present form has historically been associated with the Provisional IRA. Sinn Féin is currently the second-largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, where it has four ministerial posts in the power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive, and the fourth-largest party in the Oireachtas, the parliament of the Republic of Ireland. In the 2009 European Parliament election the Sinn Féin candidate in Northern Ireland, Bairbre de Brún, topped the poll, a first for the party in any Northern Ireland election. Sinn Féin also received a plurality of Northern Ireland votes in the 2010 United Kingdom general election, although the Democratic Unionist Party won more seats. It is the third biggest political party on the island of Ireland with a popular vote of 398,915 when both the 2011 general election in the Republic of Ireland and the 2011 Assembly election in Northern Ireland are taken into account.
