Not once during this movie or Home Alone (1990) do Harry or Marv call Kevin by name. They have no opportunity because they only know the names of his parents from the details of the first movie. All Harry said to refer to Kevin at the beginning of the first film was "a whiny kid, who was pitching a fit." The bag that Kevin holds in front of Duncan's Toy Chest has the last name and initial on it. Harry looks at Kevin's plane ticket before tearing it up and could possibly have seen his name on it. And near the end of this movie, the Pigeon Lady yells, "Kevin, run!" in front of Marv and Harry.

A twelve-year-old Greg Sestero was so enthralled by Home Alone (1990) that he wrote a speculative script for a sequel titled "Home Alone 2: Lost in Disney World". In the script, Kevin accidentally boards a plane to Florida, where he visits the title theme park and bonds with his neighbor Drake (whom Sestero intended to play) as they confront a team of bandits who have broken out of prison to work incognito as park janitors. Sestero sent his script, as well as a poster, proposals for the marketing campaign/soundtrack and a request for a cross-promotional deal between Twentieth Century Fox and (its future asset owner) Disney, to Hughes Entertainment, which were returned to him a month later with a letter from writer and producer John Hughes reading "Believe in yourself, have patience, and always follow your heart." Sestero was inspired by Hughes' letter to pursue acting and writing professionally. Ironically, the eventual sequel bears striking similarities to Sestero's script, including the concept of Kevin being separated from his family by taking a different flight, and having to confront the Wet Bandits following their prison escape. Obviously, despite the use of Florida (where the rest of the McCallisters go on vacation), there are no references to Disney World, while the more original plot element of Kevin bonding with someone of his age was replaced with a reprise of his meeting with an older outcast as in the first movie. Sestero eventually discussed the first movie's influence on him and his script with Macaulay Culkin in a June 2018 episode of the latter's podcast Bunny Ears.

This movie borrowed a few ideas from the first movie. Examples include Kevin again getting into trouble with his family, Kevin being sent to the third floor room for the night, the family sleeping in, Kevin eating a cheese pizza, Kevin watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966), Kevin tricking other people, in this case, the hotel staff that the mafia boss in Filthy Angels is talking to them directly, Kevin misunderstanding a creepy looking adult, in this case, the bird woman as evil, Kevin again famously setting traps for Harry and Marv and the movie ending with Kevin about to be in trouble again, in this case, ringing up a massive hotel bill. In fact, John Hughes and Chris Columbus admitted that this movie was really more of a remake of the previous movie, despite being released only two years after the first one.
