It’s been revealed that one of the first pieces of DLC players will experience in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be a story mission surrounding the legend of Beowulf. For the unfamiliar, the story of Beowulf comes from an Old English epic poem set in sixth century Scandinavia wherein the titular hero helps Hrothgar, King of the Danes, slay a monster known as Grendel.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was officially announced just a few weeks ago on April 30 after being teased via a stream by artist BossLogic. The twelfth major installment in the series, Valhalla was announced for a holiday 2020 release and is said to be shorter and smaller than its predecessor, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but will still allow players to choose the main character’s gender . The new game was shown off further during the recent Xbox 20/20 livestream wherein a new trailer was revealed. Despite being called a “gameplay trailer,” the video showcased during the stream didn’t really show any actual hands-on gameplay, which expectedly upset a large number of fans.

The listing was spotted by GameNotify on Twitter, which shared the link to the game’s listing on the German Ubisoft Store. In the listing, the Beowulf story mission is described as “The Legend of Beowulf. Discover the cruel truth behind the legend.” In contrast, the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla listing on the International Ubisoft Store simply says “Enjoy an immersive Story Mission, available at Launch” rather than explicitly mentioning the Beowulf mission. Both sites also describe the season pass to offer “access to epic new content, explore new lands and discover new gear.”
Considering that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is set during the viking raids of the ninth century and taking into account the DLC’s description, the developers are definitely taking historical liberties with the Beowulf story mission, which isn’t exactly a first for the series. Apart from the “Legend of Beowulf” story mission, another DLC mission called “The Way of the Berserker” will also be available to those who pre-order the game, although no description of the mission was listed.
It will be interesting to see where Ubisoft will take not only the Legend of Beowulf DLC story missions but also the entire game itself, especially with the recent news that Ubisoft plans to overhaul the RPG elements that were present in both Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. We’ll have to wait and see whether the changes will help bring back fans of the older action-focused games, alienate the newer fanbase that enjoyed the more open and RPG-centric gameplay of the latest entries, or finally hit a sweet spot that will be pleasing to both.
